Collage Painting
What is a collage painting? A collage painting is a painting that has been
enhanced with the rich, unpredictable textures of collage.
Collage is an artistic composition made of various materials (as paper, cloth, or wood) glued on a surface.
I began collage painting in 2006 when inspired to create a portrait of my sister who'd succumbed
to breast cancer earlier that year. Painting has always been therapeutic to me
and I wanted to create something, in her memory, that would allow me to purge my
mourning. I quickly realized that more could be said in a collage/painting,
texture-filled combination of her than just through a painting of her.
Collage almost adds a 3rd dimension to a 2D representation of an image.
I believe that we are so much more than our outward appearance. We are a composite of all of our life's
experiences. For this reason, I feel collage and painting, combined, to be
appropriate in that it allows us to celebrate the many colors and textures of
life that form us into who we are; only possible through this union of media.
Contingent upon the inspiration, these collages may combine
watercolor painting, acrylic painting, wire, beads, fabric and writings, poetry, maps
and other literary media.
My collage paintings tell a story.
